If he doesn’t, one source tells ESPN that the team is interested in former Utah Jazz power forward Carlos Boozer(notes). Yesterday, the Miami Herald reported that Boozer was also getting interest from the Miami Heat, but that it would take a sign-and-trade to get him under the salary cap in south Florida.

The ESPN source says a meeting between the Knicks and Boozer is "possible." Who wouldn’t want a guy who won an Olympic gold medal, and been an All-Star twice? He averaged 19.5 points, 11.2 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game last year.

ESPN reports that at least three teams have contacted the 7-1 free agent, including the Atlanta Hawks, Dallas Mavericks, and Boston Celtics.

None of the conversations have gone too far and "no financial terms have been broached," the site reports. Those three teams are all over the salary cap already so the most he can be offered, according to ESPN, is a mid-level exception at $5.8 million annually.

The Suns are still trying to trade guard Leandro Barboso in order to save some more dough, Spears reports. Barboso makes $7.1 million this coming season and then has a player option for $7.6 million for the following year.

The lucky man who gets to try and fill Stoudemire’s shoes in Phoenix is Hakim Warrick(notes), according to Arizona Central. The team offered the man who split last season between the Chicago Bulls and Milwaukee Bucks a four-year, $18 million deal after Stoudemire wouldn’t take the iv-year, $96.6 million deal the Suns were offering.

A Phoenix sports-radio host, John Gombadoro, tweeted that there is no way Stoudemire is returning to the Suns and that the power forward is leaning toward signing with the Knicks, who he believes have offered Stoudemire a max contract.

Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski reports that there is no max offer on the table just yet and that the "sides will talk over weekend."

HoopsWorld also has it that the Knicks haven’t made an offer just yet but negotiations have started. The site’s source says the Suns "came in too low" with its offer.

Wojnarowski’s sources expect Johnson to take the deal that General Manager Rick Sun delivered to Johnson personally in Los Angeles last night just after the free-agency negotiating window got thrown open.

Johnson also met with folks from the New York Knicks, Wojnarowski reports, including coach Mike D’Antoni but without Knicks president Donnie Walsh. Two other teams – the Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks — also wanted to meet with Johnson yesterday to talk about potential sign-and-trade deals, according to Wojnarowski.
