There’s about a month to go before the NBA trading deadline and it is looking like the Detroit Pistons will look like a different team after the deadline than they do now, according to the Associated Press. Pistons’ president of basketball operations Joe Dumars ripped apart his team when he figured out it wouldn’t be an Eastern Conference powerhouse so you can be sure he won’t be afraid to make a deal now that his team is down in the dumps.

"We will not be averse to being active before the trading deadline,” Dumars told the AP. "But we’re definitely not going to be active just to be active. At this stage, it has to make sense for us going forward. We’re not looking for a short-term fix.”

It would take a lot to even have a short-term fix for the Pistons who will likely try to find a point guard a low-post player that is up on the trading block.

The New Orleans Hornets apparently were close to having a deal in place to send guard Devin Brown(notes) to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Jason Hart(notes), but the two sides couldn’t get it to work out financially, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

The Hornets apparently asked Brown to give up some of the cash he had coming to him so the deal could work but he wouldn’t do it. The money was contained in trade bonus in his contract that gives Brown a payout of 10 percent of his $1.1 million salary if he gets traded.

"There are some technical rules as to how the salaries have to match up, " Brown’s agent told the paper, "for those teams to make that particular trade they had envisioned. In order for that trade to work with the numbers, Devin would have had to modify part of his contract that was contained in his trade bonus."

Hart was then traded to the Phoenix Suns.

With the economy not as strong as it once was, the NBA was bracing itself before the season got started for a lot of empty seats. But things have gone much better than expected, which is making all those players that will become free agents this summer very happy because it means that the salary cap certainly won’t drop as much as some were expecting.

Some had thought that salary-cap drop could be as much as $6 million or $7 million, according to ESPN, but that seems like an outsize number at this point. It is still expected that the cap will drop while simultaneously the streets swell the number of talented free agents becoming available this summer.

The current salary cap is $57.7 million and ESPN has dug up what a few teams are projecting to be the numbers for next season as they plan out their free-agent-signing strategies: The Miami Heat apparently has the biggest projected drop in the cap and is planning around a budget of $52 million. Meanwhile, the New York Knicks are banking on the number being closer to $53 million. And the New Jersey Nets are hoping things don’t drop that much and are projecting a budget of between $54 million and $55 million to work with.

Orlando Magic point guard Jameer Nelson (notes) had knee surgery on Nov. 18 and could be back as early as this evening when the team takes on the Utah Jazz , according to the Orlando Sentinel

Orlando Magic point guard Jameer Nelson(notes) had knee surgery on Nov. 18 and could be back as early as this evening when the team takes on the Utah Jazz, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

He apparently practiced with the team yesterday. A few days ago, Magic coach Stan Van Gundy was saying that Nelson wouldn’t be back till later this week, but now it’s looking like Nelson could be in the lineup tonight. "There’s definitely more of a possibility," Van Gundy said.

Nelson won’t likely start.

Hopefully while he was injured, Nelson got to spend extra time with his young son, Jameer Jr., who supposedly goes by the nickname Deuce.

Portland Trail Blazers guard Andre Miller (notes) has supposedly been on the trading block this season, but he's supposedly not on it right now because the team is offering up another guard to potential suitors, according to ESPN.

Portland Trail Blazers guard Andre Miller(notes) has supposedly been on the trading block this season, but he’s supposedly not on it right now because the team is offering up another guard to potential suitors, according to ESPN.

Two general managers supposedly told the paper that Steve Blake(notes) has been offered to them when they called asking for Miller. One thing that apparently bugs Blazers coach Nate McMillan is that he supposedly feels like he has to play Blake even when he’s struggling because Brandon Roy(notes) likes to play with him rather than Miller. Blake doesn’t make that much dough and has a contract that will end at year’s end so he’d be more attractive in a trade than Miller.

The idea is supposedly to get Blake out of Portland so the Roy pressure is relieved and Miller has more room to gain confidence and playing time. Plus, the team would like to give Jerryd Bayless(notes) some more playing time, particularly since he’s been vocal about his lack of time on the court.

Bayless hasn’t reportedly asked for a trade but is planning to if things remain the same.

Former NBA ref Tim Donaghy doesn’t have a lot of friends in the National Basketball Association. You wouldn’t either if you spent 15 months in federal prison for giving the inside dope on players and games to a couple of gamblers and then wrote a book about it and claimed that other refs are behaving just as poorly.

Well, Donaghy made himself another foe this week, according to the New York Post. The lead negotiator and spokesman for the NBA’s referees, Lamell McMorris, has apparently had it up to here with Donaghy’s claims, which he trotted out on ESPN and "60 Minutes" this week.

McMorris is saying that not only is Donaghy a compulsive liar but that he made some threats against him, according to the Associated Press.

He apparently said last week, "It is vital that I start to memorize the plays." Um, yeah, that would be good. He went on to say, "I’ve been used to a certain system for 17 years, so I have to work on that. I still have a few days before we start."

Guess Shaq has been too busy hosting his own reality show to learn his plays. You’d think for $21 million, the Cavs would have a guy who would at least study his playbook more than a week before the season gets underway.

Bell is supposedly waiting to hear what a specialist in Chicago says about the hand. Meanwhile, he’s wrapping up the hand and practicing layups and three pointers. What ligament tear?

Bell is saying he’s split down the middle between the obligation he’s made to himself, his family, and his career and the obligation he’s made to the team. "Being a competitor and a businessman, I’m kind of split down the middle," he said. "Hopefully this (specialist) comes back, tells me I’m fine to play, and then I don’t have to make a decision.”

The New Jersey Nets played two preseason games in Newark and the team drew so well there in comparison to what it normally gets for regular-season games at the Meadowlands that the team is considering playing a bunch of regular-season games there, according to the Newark Star-Ledger. The problem is that the team is supposedly trying to figure out a way around the $8 million penalty that it could incur if it doesn’t play all its home games at the Meadowlands.

Meanwhile, some residents of Brooklyn, where the team is planning to move, are hoping that the team hits enough legal hurdles in its plans for a new arena and also finds Newark so welcoming that it will bag on its plan. Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov, who only needs to gain approval from other owners in order to take over the team, seems more interested in having a team in New York City’s five boroughs than in Newark, though.

Prokhorov apparently met up with a bunch of owners this week and NBA Comissioner David Stern is seeing no reason the basketball-loving fella who is worth $9.5 billion won’t be pass muster. Who woldn’t want that kind of cash around in these rough financial times?

Emeka Okafor (notes) is about to play his first season with the New Orleans Hornets , but he's apparently already lost the confidence of his new teammates , according to Yahoo! Sports' Marc J. Spears.

Emeka Okafor(notes) is about to play his first season with the New Orleans Hornets, but he’s apparently already lost the confidence of his new teammates, according to Yahoo! Sports’ Marc J. Spears.

Okafor has been out with a hurt toe but he’s supposedly been cleared to play for some time now and his teammates are getting annoyed that he hasn’t gotten back onto the court. After all, the season is coming fast now. One teammate said, "He better practice Sunday or he could lose some guys," one Hornet said.

Head coach Byron Scott is saying that Okafor is telling him he’s not ready to go out there just yet. "When you have a guy that says he is not ready, the worst thing you can do is force him to get out there," Scott said.

Well, he better get it together soon or he may be spending a lot of time by himself on road trips when he finally decides to play.
