The Houston Rockets managed to get by the Portland Trail Blazers 103-96 Wednesday night but lost point guard Kyle Lowry somewhere along the way.

The Houston Chronicle reports that Lowry headed to the locker room early with an elbow injury suffered in the third quarter.

“I tried to throw a pass to Jordan (Hill) on a cut,” Lowry said Wednesday, according to the Chronicle. “I kind of hyper-extended it, strained it a bit. I just have to do treatment. You know me. I don’t want to sit out too many games. I don’t want to sit out games at all. I’ll see how I feel tomorrow and get treatment in the morning and see how it feels.”

The 25-year-old Philadelphia native, who was selected in the first round of the 2006 draft by the Memphis Grizzlies out of Villanova, is averaging 14.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 7.9 assists per game this season.

When the Denver Nuggets take the floor Wednesday night against the Dallas Mavericks, they will be without its top scorer, small forward Danilo Gallinari. And the word from the Denver Post is that they could be without him for a month.

Gallinari went down with an ankle sprain Monday night during a 99-90 loss to the Houston Rockets.

“Four weeks if it can be faster, it’s better, but with these kind of things, you want to take your time and have it heal in the right way,” said Gallinari, according to the paper.

The 23-year-old Italian native who came over to the Nuggets in the trade with the New York Knicks for Carmelo Anthony is averaging 17 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game. He recently signed a four-year, $42 million contract with the team.

The New Orleans Hornets don’t want Chris Kaman around, but plenty of other teams do. After playing in 17 games for the Hornets, Kaman has missed the last five as the team tries to find a way to trade him.

The New Orleans Times Picayune reports that rumored destinations for him include the Houston Rockets, Indiana Pacers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, and San Antonio Spurs.

The Rockets are reportedly at the top of the heap with an offer that includes young players and draft picks, SI.com reports. The two young players that are being discussed, the paper notes, are center Hasheem Thabeet and power forward Jordan Hill, both of whom were in the top 10 picks of the 2009 draft.

Meanwhile, the Times Picayune reports that a Houston television station repotted Wednesday night that it was doubtful the Rockets would get a deal done for Kaman. The paper is hearing that the Indiana Pacers actually are leading the charge for Kaman’s services as it wants to find a backup for Roy Hibbert.

The 29-year-old seven-footer, who has a $14 million expiring contract, averaged 9.2 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game in his 17 appearances this season.

Eric Gordon only played two games for the New Orleans Hornets this season before being shut down on Jan. 6 due to a bruised right knee. Now the original three-week window the team gave him to recover is set to close on Friday, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports. It isn’t looking like he’ll be ready at that point.

Gordon wasn’t at the team’s shootaround Monday or at its 104-102 loss to the San Antonio Spurs because he was “receiving further examination on his bruised right knee at a location the team did not disclose,” the paper reports. The team wouldn’t even say exactly what tests the 23-year-old shooting guard was undergoing, the paper notes.

Yahoo! Sports’ Marc J. Spears has it from Gordon that he was seeing a team-appointed doctor in New York Monday and that he was told that he shouldn’t return to basketball activities for another three weeks.

Spears also reports that Gordon is “waiting to learn whether NBA commissioner David Stern will grant him a contract extension before Wednesday’s deadline.” Spears reports that Gordon’s agent, Rob Pelinka, has had talks with the team recently about getting his client a new contract, but no official offer has been made.

Gordon told Spears that he’d like to re-sign with the team, but he can’t do anything till Stern gives the go-ahead.

Chicago Bulls forward Luol Deng may be out for “a while,” according to the Chicago Sun-Times, due to a left wrist injury. The paper notes that the loss of Deng is huge to the Bulls since he is “the team’s best defender and an excellent all-around player.”

Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau noted Monday that Deng is getting “multiple opinions” from various doctors to figure out his course of action and wasn’t sure if Deng would need surgery: “Ah, I don’t know. I don’t think so, would be my guess,” Thibodeau said, according to the Sun-Times. “There are people he wants to talk to. He’s gone down this road with an injured wrist before. My guess would be it will be day-to-day.”

Deng, the 26-year-old native of the Sudan who was picked seventh overall in the 2004 draft, is averaging 15.9 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game.l

Roy Oswalt could be heading back to Texas. The 34-year-old played his first nine and a half seasons with the Houston Astros before being dealt to the Philadelphia Phillies.

Now the Dallas Morning News has it that the Texas Rangers have asked Oswalt’s agent about what it would take to snag his client. The Rangers, of course, are also busy these days trying to finish up the contract negotiations with Japanese import Yu Darvish before that time window closes.

Oswalt’s agent, Bob Garber, wasn’t talking Thursday, the paper notes, but he was “attending the Rangers awards show at the Arlington Convention Center” since one of his other clients, outfielder Craig Gentry, was receiving the Rangers’ rookie-of-the-year award.

Oswalt, a three-time All-Star, went 9-10 with a 3.69 ERA and a couple of stints on the disabled list for the Phils last year.

Now without the services of retired 7-6 center Yao Ming, Rockets coach Kevin McHale and GM Daryl Morey will meet with the 6-11 Brazilian in Denver on Monday, a source tells the Houston Chronicle. Nene, who has played for the Denver Nuggets since 2002, was a trade target of the Rockets last season, the paper notes.

The Chronicle reports that Morey is also in discussions with the rep for free-agent center Tyson Chandler as well.

The New Jersey Nets are “expected to meet” with Nene this week as well, according to the New York Post. League sources tell the paper that the Nets “have been among the most aggressive suitors for Nene.”

“All signs point to me going back to Phoenix,” Brooks said, HoopsWorld reports. “I had a good time. I like the organization and it’s a great city. I would love to continue playing in Phoenix. I would love to stay with this team. This summer, I’m going to get more comfortable with the guys. I want to get to know everyone a little bit better and then hopefully we have a better season than we did last year.”

The Suns can match any offer Brooks receives from other clubs when the lockout is lifted.

Brooks averaged 10.9 points, 3.9 assists and 1.3 rebounds per game last season. He played 25 games for the Suns during the regular season and 34 for the Houston Rockets, the team that drafted him late in the first round of the 2007 draft.

The 6-11 24-year-old has only appeared in four NBA games for the Utah Jazz, averaging 4.5 minutes of play, one point and .8 rebounds, but the Houston Rockets want him back in Texas for three years, according to a source to the Houston Chronicle.

The Maryland native currently plays for the Rockets’ D-League team, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.

The Chronicle notes that the Rockets will waive forward DeMarre Carroll in order to make space for Cousin.

Whatever happens this year, it is extremely unclear what will happen next season. Head coach Rick Adelman’s contract is up at season’s end and Adelman, who lives in Portland, has been saying that he isn’t sure if he’ll retire or if he’ll opt to return.

The decision may not be his to make. The Houston Chronicle reports that Rockets owner Leslie Alexander isn’t chomping at the bit to get Adelman back. "At the end of the season, I’ll sit down with (general manager) Daryl (Morey) and we’ll talk about it," Alexander said, the Chronicle reports. "Nothing has been done yet, or thought about yet in that regard."
