There are only a few weeks left before the NBA trading deadline hits and the Portland Trail Blazers, with a few injuries to its front line, would apparently like to make a deal for a big man before then, according to ESPN.

The fella they supposedly would like to grab the most is Washington Wizards center Brendan Haywood(notes), who has an expiring $6 million contract. The Wizards reportedly asked for Rudy Fernandez(notes) and Nicolas Batum(notes) in exchange. So the Blazers said nix on that.

A backup plan for the Blazers is the Chicago Bulls‘ Brad Miller(notes), but it appears that Chicago is becoming increasingly less interested in moving Miller as time passes.

The Utah Jazz have had a pretty disappointing season thus far and as a result, fans of the team shouldn’t expect the roster after the trading deadline to be too similar to the one they currently see.

The word from Yahoo! Sports’ Marc Spears is that every single member of the team is on the trading block, except for point guard Deron Williams(notes).

Carlos Boozer(notes) is making $12.6 million this year in the last year of his contract will certainly attract the most interest and the team would love to unload him but no serious talks have taken place just yet.

The New Orleans Hornets apparently were close to having a deal in place to send guard Devin Brown(notes) to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Jason Hart(notes), but the two sides couldn’t get it to work out financially, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

The Hornets apparently asked Brown to give up some of the cash he had coming to him so the deal could work but he wouldn’t do it. The money was contained in trade bonus in his contract that gives Brown a payout of 10 percent of his $1.1 million salary if he gets traded.

"There are some technical rules as to how the salaries have to match up, " Brown’s agent told the paper, "for those teams to make that particular trade they had envisioned. In order for that trade to work with the numbers, Devin would have had to modify part of his contract that was contained in his trade bonus."

Hart was then traded to the Phoenix Suns.

With the economy not as strong as it once was, the NBA was bracing itself before the season got started for a lot of empty seats. But things have gone much better than expected, which is making all those players that will become free agents this summer very happy because it means that the salary cap certainly won’t drop as much as some were expecting.

Some had thought that salary-cap drop could be as much as $6 million or $7 million, according to ESPN, but that seems like an outsize number at this point. It is still expected that the cap will drop while simultaneously the streets swell the number of talented free agents becoming available this summer.

The current salary cap is $57.7 million and ESPN has dug up what a few teams are projecting to be the numbers for next season as they plan out their free-agent-signing strategies: The Miami Heat apparently has the biggest projected drop in the cap and is planning around a budget of $52 million. Meanwhile, the New York Knicks are banking on the number being closer to $53 million. And the New Jersey Nets are hoping things don’t drop that much and are projecting a budget of between $54 million and $55 million to work with.

He apparently practiced with the team yesterday. A few days ago, Magic coach Stan Van Gundy was saying that Nelson wouldn’t be back till later this week, but now it’s looking like Nelson could be in the lineup tonight. "There’s definitely more of a possibility," Van Gundy said.

Nelson won’t likely start.

Hopefully while he was injured, Nelson got to spend extra time with his young son, Jameer Jr., who supposedly goes by the nickname Deuce.

Former NBA ref Tim Donaghy doesn’t have a lot of friends in the National Basketball Association. You wouldn’t either if you spent 15 months in federal prison for giving the inside dope on players and games to a couple of gamblers and then wrote a book about it and claimed that other refs are behaving just as poorly.

Well, Donaghy made himself another foe this week, according to the New York Post. The lead negotiator and spokesman for the NBA’s referees, Lamell McMorris, has apparently had it up to here with Donaghy’s claims, which he trotted out on ESPN and "60 Minutes" this week.

McMorris is saying that not only is Donaghy a compulsive liar but that he made some threats against him, according to the Associated Press.

It appears that any friendship that Magic Johnson and Isiah Thomas once had is over. Johnson says all sorts of unpleasant stuff about Thomas in his new book, "When the Game was Ours."

According to the New York Post, Johnson’s book alleges that Thomas went around the league spreading the rumor and trying to find proof that Magic was gay or bisexual after Johnson announced that he had HIV. Magic admits in the book that he went out of his way to blackball Thomas off of the initial Dream Team in 1992 that went on to win the gold medal at the Olympics in Barcelona.

Perhaps Magic felt so bad about that that he recommended Thomas to former Madison Square Garden President Steve Mills to take over the New York Knicks back in 2004. Of course, that ended up being a fiasco for both Thomas and the Knicks.

Thomas tells the Post that he and Magic used to go dinner along with Herb Williams whenever Johnson came to New York and stopped in at a Knicks game. Those days are over, fellas.

Scouts for the Miami Heat are apparently keeping their eyes wide open for anybody who can play backup point guard, according to the Miami Herald.

Scouts for the Miami Heat are apparently keeping their eyes wide open for anybody who can play backup point guard, according to the Miami Herald.

The team was reportedly pretty disappointed by the performance of Mario Chalmers(notes) and Chris Quinn(notes) on Monday evening so another guard could be added soon enough. Rumor has it that Jamaal Tinsley(notes) is near the top of the list. He’s been working out in Vegas. Other names that could be on the list are Bobby Jackson(notes) and Brevin Knight(notes).

Quinn thinks he’s got one thing working against him. The 6′2", 175-pounder tells the paper that he is always underestimated "because of the way I look. I don’t pass the look test.” Whatever that means. His 0-2 shooting on Monday in more than seven minutes of playing probably didn’t help him too much, either.

Back in July, the Los Angeles Lakers signed the unpredictable and extremely talented Ron Artest(notes) to its championship squad to a five-year deal supposedly worth around $33 million. He’s apparently happy to team up with a buddy of his from childhood basketball days in New York, Lamar Odom(notes).

But Artest is also apparently ready to take on the blame of L.A. fans if the Lakers don’t repeat as champions, according to the Los Angeles Times: "They won last year, and I’m the new addition. The fans expect to repeat. Everybody in L.A. expects a second ring. And if we don’t then yeah, they should point it right at me, throwing tomatoes and everything," he said.

By the way, he’ll apparently wear No. 37 with the Lakers in honor of Michael Jackson, whose Thriller album spent 37 weeks at the top of the charts.

Start planning those tomato gardens now. Just in case.
