The Milwaukee Bucks currently hold the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. There is still a lot of this short season left and Brandon Jennings could help the Bucks make a strong push.

Whatever happens, though, it is extremely doubtful that the third-year point guard will sign an extension with the team this summer as he is eligible to do. Jennings told ESPN that he wants to not box himself in and be available the following summer when the 22-year-old can be a free agent.

“I am going to keep my options open, knowing that the time is coming up,” Jennings told ESPN. “I’m doing my homework on big market teams.”

However, Bucks fans shouldn’t give up just yet on the dream of having Jennings as a building block for the long-term: “I’m not saying I won’t (sign an extension with the Bucks) and I’m not saying I will,” he said, ESPN reports. “I’m just keeping my options open.”

It’s kind of funny to hear Jennings, who bagged out of playing for the University of Arizona so he could go play in Italy, talk about doing his homework. Jennings, who was picked 10^th overall in the 2009 draft, is averaging 18.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game this season.

The New Jersey Nets brought shooting guard Keith Bogans in only slightly more than a week ago because the team’s roster was so depleted by injuries. So what does Bogans do? Gets seriously hurt.

The New York Daily News reports that the 31-year-old vet of seven teams “was diagnosed with a complete tear of his deltoid ligament and a fractured ankle” on Thursday and will miss the rest of the season after having surgery.

The 8-19 Nets, who have lost six of their last seven games, but are still only four games out of playoff contention at this point and are again playing shorthanded.

The Toronto Raptors have taken to the floor without forward Andrea Bargnani 14 times so far this season and it’s looking like he’s going to miss a few more games with his strained right calf, according to the National Post.

The 26-year-old suffered the injury in January and returned after six games, but re-injured it this month and the site notes that “it would not be a surprise if he sat out until the all-star break, two weeks from now,” though it could be longer.

“His timeframe is extended, whether it is two weeks or three weeks, whatever it is,” Raptors coach Dwane Casey said Thursday, the National Post reports. “We’re not putting a day on it. Extended is beyond day to day, I think.”

In the 13 games he’s played, Bargnani is averaging 23.5 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, both career highs.

The Houston Rockets managed to get by the Portland Trail Blazers 103-96 Wednesday night but lost point guard Kyle Lowry somewhere along the way.

The Houston Chronicle reports that Lowry headed to the locker room early with an elbow injury suffered in the third quarter.

“I tried to throw a pass to Jordan (Hill) on a cut,” Lowry said Wednesday, according to the Chronicle. “I kind of hyper-extended it, strained it a bit. I just have to do treatment. You know me. I don’t want to sit out too many games. I don’t want to sit out games at all. I’ll see how I feel tomorrow and get treatment in the morning and see how it feels.”

The 25-year-old Philadelphia native, who was selected in the first round of the 2006 draft by the Memphis Grizzlies out of Villanova, is averaging 14.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 7.9 assists per game this season.

Forward Wilson Chandler is still finishing out his contract with China’s Zhejiang Guangsha but when he is free to return to the NBA, he plans to sign on with his former team, the Denver Nuggets, according to Yahoo! Sports’ Marc J. Spears.

Chandler’s agent, Chris Luchey, told Spears that there is “significant interest” from other teams in Chandler, but the 6-8 24-year-old prefers to be back in the Mile High City.

“Wilson likes their direction and the stabilization of their roster in Denver with the young talent,” Luchey told Spears. “He wants to see how they develop as a team. It’s a unique situation. The ball is in their court. If Wilson is comfortable, he will be a part of their core group.”

And Denver GM Masai Ujiri, who is planning to visit Chandler in China for the regular-season finale on Feb. 15 or during the postseason, says the team is interested in binging back the restricted free agent, Spears reports.

The Cleveland Cavaliers, currently in fourth place in the Central Division, surprisingly took down the Pacific Division-leading Los Angeles Clippers 99-92 Wednesday night and they did it without the help of rookie sensation Kyrie Irving.

The 19-year-old who was drafted first overall this past summer was pulled from the lineup before the opening tipoff when team docs diagnosed him with a concussion, the Associated Press reports. He was apparently kneed in the head in the Cavs’ 107-91 loss to the Miami Heat on Tuesday.

“He went out and warmed up and said it felt like his head was on fire,” Cavaliers coach Byron Scott said, the AP reports. “He says he’s doing fine.”

Irving is averaging 18 points, tops in the league for rookies, and 5.1 assists per game. The AP notes that there is no timetable for when he will return to action.

The Los Angeles Lakers are in need of a point guard and the word is that the team wouldn’t mind doing a deal with the Boston Celtics to land Rajon Rondo.

Lakers GM Milt Kupchak tells Lakers.com that there is definitely something he’d like to do before the trading deadline: “If there were a way for us to get a 25-year-old, All-Star, ball-handling guard we’d love to do it but that’s not likely in February. So you look at other alternatives, and see if it’s better than what you have. That’s all.”

As Hoopsworld points out, Rondo is the only 25-year-old, All-Star, ball-handling guard in the league right now. Sources also tell the site that, in exchange for Rondo, the Celtics “have interest” in forward/center Pau Gasol, who has two years left on his contract after this season.

Gasol is averaging 16.4 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 0.5 blocks per game. Rondo is averaging 13.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 9.8 assists per game for the Celts.
