"We will not be averse to being active before the trading deadline,” Dumars told the AP. "But we’re definitely not going to be active just to be active. At this stage, it has to make sense for us going forward. We’re not looking for a short-term fix.”

It would take a lot to even have a short-term fix for the Pistons who will likely try to find a point guard a low-post player that is up on the trading block.

Apparently not. Celtics restricted free agent power forward Glen Davis isn’t seeing much action on the contractual front and it’s getting him annoyed.

As teams across the league (including his own with the signing of Shelden Williams!) sign other power forwards, Davis is starting to wonder what is up with his lack of signing.

Maybe it’s his own demands that are holding things up. Davis supposedly did not like the last offer made by the Celtics earlier this week, according to the Boston Herald. He sent out a few frustrated tweets: "Anybody know what’s going on with the Celtics? Cause I don’t!" and "Well I don’t know where I’m going to be!!! Where (you) guys think I’m going to be!!! Who needs a pf?"

During a recent interview on ESPN, newly signed Los Angeles Lakers forward Ron Artest said the team needed to be "hoodalized.”

There is a difference of opinion whether signing the veteran, physical forward to a deal was a good thing or a bad thing. The deal has been both ripped and praised in the Los Angeles Times for example.

However, the Times did note that Artest, like him or not, will fill a void for the Lakers, who were viewed as "soft” during different junctures of the regular season and playoffs.

The Times wrote: A little more than a month ago Denver physically pound them (the Lakers) to tie the Western Conference finals at two games each. They obviously toughened up enough to win those next two games, as well as the Finals, but this move was done with an eye toward the Eastern Conference. Now they have someone to slow down LeBron James. And Paul Pierce. (And also Carmelo Anthony . . . can’t totally ignore the West.)

The Boston Celtics are pressing Rasheed Wallace — for a decision, according to the Boston Globe.

The Globe reported that Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett, and Paul Pierce joined president of basketball operations Danny Ainge and managing partner Wyc Grousbeck for a three-hour meeting with Wallace in Detroit yesterday, the Celtics offering a contract using their midlevel exception. But Wallace is apparently in no hurry to respond, preferring to weigh approaches from Charlotte, Cleveland, Orlando, and San Antonio, according to an NBA source.

Bill Strickland, Wallace’s agent, said in a text message that it was a "very good meeting; some contractual terms discussed, nothing agreed to.”

Strickland added Wallace will be "meeting with a few more teams next week.”

Wallace is coming off a five-year contract with the Pistons, earning $13.68 million last season. The teams courting Wallace would be offering the midlevel exception, worth between $5.6 million and $5.8 million. So, Wallace’s choice will be based on other factors, and the Celtics believe they have an advantage because of the forward’s relationship with Garnett and the team’s good chance to compete for a championship, the Globe reported.

The deal that sends Shaquille O’Neal to the Cleveland Cavaliers had a ripped effect in New York Thursday morning with the Big Apple newspapers wondering if the deal will be enough to keep LeBron James in Cleveland after 2010.

The New York Daily News also reported that according to one Eastern Conference president, the deal is still not enough for the Cavaliers to beat the Orlando Magic.

The Daily News wrote: Shaq alone would not necessarily be enough to help the Cavs to even overtake the Magic in the East. While Shaq enjoyed a bit of a revival last season, the Suns missed the playoffs, and O’Neal is not the same player he was when he was winning three titles with the Lakers from 2000-02.

"They didn’t give up anything for him in terms of main rotation players," said one Eastern Conference president. "So that’s good. But Shaq doesn’t give them size in their backcourt to match up with the Magic. And as for being someone who can guard Dwight Howard, Shaq can’t do that. The Magic are still better, depending on what happens in free agency."

The Cleveland Cavaliers have set out to dispell rumors that Mike Brown, the newly named NBA Coach of the Year, was in jeopardy of losing his job. Among the rumors was that Pat Riley would be contacted to take over as head coach, according the the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

ProBasketballNews.com, an Ohio-based Web site, reported the Cavs’ front office was in "disarray" and considering firing Brown following the Eastern Conference finals loss to the Orlando Magic. The New York Daily News’ Web site that said there were reports of "infighting" within the Cavs’ front office over Brown’s job and suggested the team should pursue Miami Heat President and coaching Hall of Famer Pat Riley to replace him.

The rumors started as the result of criticism over Brown’s strategies and lineup adjustments were never able to overcome the matchup advantages the Magic had over the Cavs, according to the Plain Dealer.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Thursday that Riley has not been contacted by any team to unretire from coaching.

According to the Plain Dealer, Brown has the backing of General Manager Danny Ferry, team owner Dan Gilbert and LeBron James, who credits his vast improvement on defense and the team’s postseason success directly to Brown.

It’s doubtful anyone believes the Orlando Magic will shoot as poorly as they did last night during the rest of the series against the Los Angeles Lakers. But it was clear the Magic may have underestimated the defensive versatility of the Lakers, according to the Los Angeles Daily News.

According to the report, Los Angeles has versatility than the Cleveland Cavaliers, who didn’t have the size or athletic ability to contain Dwight Howard or long-range shooters Hedo Turkoglu and Rashard Lewis.

"Defensively, I thought the Lakers were great tonight," Van Gundy said.

Turkoglu and Lewis burned the Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference finals, but they combined for just 21 points and three 3-pointers in Game1 while getting hounded by Lamar Odom, Trevor Ariza, Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol.

Credit the Lakers, who did an admirable job of clogging the passing lanes and making it difficult for the Magic to pound the ball inside to Howard, who finished with 12points on just six shots. By limiting his touches, it also meant he couldn’t kick out to open shooters as much, a staple in Orlando’s attack.

When Howard did get the ball, the Lakers threw a variety of looks at him to force him into uncomfortable spots on the floor. The end result was was not enough Howard, too little ball movement and too much one-on-one basketball, according to the Daily News.
