There are only a few weeks left before the NBA trading deadline hits and the Portland Trail Blazers, with a few injuries to its front line, would apparently like to make a deal for a big man before then, according to ESPN.

The fella they supposedly would like to grab the most is Washington Wizards center Brendan Haywood(notes), who has an expiring $6 million contract. The Wizards reportedly asked for Rudy Fernandez(notes) and Nicolas Batum(notes) in exchange. So the Blazers said nix on that.

A backup plan for the Blazers is the Chicago Bulls‘ Brad Miller(notes), but it appears that Chicago is becoming increasingly less interested in moving Miller as time passes.

There’s about a month to go before the NBA trading deadline and it is looking like the Detroit Pistons will look like a different team after the deadline than they do now, according to the Associated Press. Pistons’ president of basketball operations Joe Dumars ripped apart his team when he figured out it wouldn’t be an Eastern Conference powerhouse so you can be sure he won’t be afraid to make a deal now that his team is down in the dumps.

"We will not be averse to being active before the trading deadline,” Dumars told the AP. "But we’re definitely not going to be active just to be active. At this stage, it has to make sense for us going forward. We’re not looking for a short-term fix.”

It would take a lot to even have a short-term fix for the Pistons who will likely try to find a point guard a low-post player that is up on the trading block.

It’s been a little hard to predict just when Kevin Garnett(notes), who is recovering from a hyperextended right knee, is going to return to the Boston Celtics lineup and you can believe that coach Doc Rivers would like to happen sooner rather than later. But he’s got to wait like the rest of us for a healthy Garnett.

What Rivers is saying right now is that Garnett could be back in the lineup in one week, on Jan. 22, to take on the Portland Trail Blazers in a home game, according to the Boston Herald.

Garnett is running again and will get a few chances to fully practice next week before perhaps testing himself in an actual game at week’s end. Rivers isn’t going to rush Garnett but there’s no doubt Garnett will be back in the lineup the second the doctors clear him to play.

The word from Yahoo!
The Hornets apparently asked Brown to give up some of the cash he had coming to him so the deal could work but he wouldn’t do it. The money was contained in trade bonus in his contract that gives Brown a payout of 10 percent of his $1.1 million salary if he gets traded.

"There are some technical rules as to how the salaries have to match up, " Brown’s agent told the paper, "for those teams to make that particular trade they had envisioned. In order for that trade to work with the numbers, Devin would have had to modify part of his contract that was contained in his trade bonus."

Hart was then traded to the Phoenix Suns.

With the economy not as strong as it once was, the NBA was bracing itself before the season got started for a lot of empty seats. But things have gone much better than expected, which is making all those players that will become free agents this summer very happy because it means that the salary cap certainly won’t drop as much as some were expecting.

Some had thought that salary-cap drop could be as much as $6 million or $7 million, according to ESPN, but that seems like an outsize number at this point. It is still expected that the cap will drop while simultaneously the streets swell the number of talented free agents becoming available this summer.

The current salary cap is $57.7 million and ESPN has dug up what a few teams are projecting to be the numbers for next season as they plan out their free-agent-signing strategies: The Miami Heat apparently has the biggest projected drop in the cap and is planning around a budget of $52 million. Meanwhile, the New York Knicks are banking on the number being closer to $53 million. And the New Jersey Nets are hoping things don’t drop that much and are projecting a budget of between $54 million and $55 million to work with.

He apparently practiced with the team yesterday. A few days ago, Magic coach Stan Van Gundy was saying that Nelson wouldn’t be back till later this week, but now it’s looking like Nelson could be in the lineup tonight. "There’s definitely more of a possibility," Van Gundy said.

Nelson won’t likely start.

Hopefully while he was injured, Nelson got to spend extra time with his young son, Jameer Jr., who supposedly goes by the nickname Deuce.

Portland Trail Blazers guard Andre Miller(notes) has supposedly been on the trading block this season, but he’s supposedly not on it right now because the team is offering up another guard to potential suitors, according to ESPN.

Two general managers supposedly told the paper that Steve Blake(notes) has been offered to them when they called asking for Miller. One thing that apparently bugs Blazers coach Nate McMillan is that he supposedly feels like he has to play Blake even when he’s struggling because Brandon Roy(notes) likes to play with him rather than Miller. Blake doesn’t make that much dough and has a contract that will end at year’s end so he’d be more attractive in a trade than Miller.

The idea is supposedly to get Blake out of Portland so the Roy pressure is relieved and Miller has more room to gain confidence and playing time. Plus, the team would like to give Jerryd Bayless(notes) some more playing time, particularly since he’s been vocal about his lack of time on the court.

Bayless hasn’t reportedly asked for a trade but is planning to if things remain the same.

Former NBA ref Tim Donaghy doesn’t have a lot of friends in the National Basketball Association. You wouldn’t either if you spent 15 months in federal prison for giving the inside dope on players and games to a couple of gamblers and then wrote a book about it and claimed that other refs are behaving just as poorly.

Well, Donaghy made himself another foe this week, according to the New York Post. The lead negotiator and spokesman for the NBA’s referees, Lamell McMorris, has apparently had it up to here with Donaghy’s claims, which he trotted out on ESPN and "60 Minutes" this week.

McMorris is saying that not only is Donaghy a compulsive liar but that he made some threats against him, according to the Associated Press.

For the longest time, the New York Knicks have been clearing salary space to make room for the summer of 2010 in the hopes of bringing in LeBron James(notes) and Dwyane Wade(notes) to save the franchise. The problem is that there isn’t much to the team right now and Wade and James have perfectly good support systems where they are right now. Plus, you don’t have to live in New York City anymore to be a media powerhouse.

So the Knicks are apparently adjusting their expectations for next summer. There is no doubt the team will make an initial run at James and Wade but the word is that the Knicks are feeling like it is much more likely they’ll end up with Toronto Raptors forward Chris Bosh(notes) and Atlanta Hawks guard Joe Johnson(notes), who are also both free agents next summer, according to the New York Daily News.

This is still a good combo and a far sight better than what the Knicks have been putting on the floor recently.

Johnson at least has a long-time relationship with Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni, who he played for years ago. "More than anything he gave me a chance, he gave me a chance to play and just play free – and kind of blossom from there. He’s a great coach," Johnson said.
