Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman is apparently spending a fair amount of time working to get an NBA team to his city, according to the Las Vegas Sun. But first he needs an arena. The city is about to sign a deal to have a feasibility study done for a downtown 20,000-seat, $145 million arena to be built and Goodman believes that once that arena is built, the city will get a team, based on conversations Goodman has had with NBA execs
Grizzlies want Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar may be on the NBA champions right now but there is word that he could moving from the top of the heap to the bottom of the pile pretty soon. Abdul-Jabbar is currently employed by the Los Angeles Lakers but his role as a special assistant to head coach Phil Jackson has apparently decreased this season, according to the Los Angeles Times
Shaquille O’Neal hasn’t learned his plays in Cleveland
The NBA season kicks off this week and Shaquille O'Neal (notes) hasn't bothered to learn the playbook just yet for the Cleveland Cavaliers , according to the Los Angeles Times. He apparently said last week, "It is vital that I start to memorize the plays." Um, yeah, that would be good
Charles Barkley ready to be a GM
Charles Barkley has been rattling the cage at TNT for eight years and now he apparently wants to be a general manager for an NBA team, according to the Boston Globe. "I think everybody around me knows it's time for me to take a different challenge," he said. The Hall of Famer says he's ready to take whatever good opportunity comes up.
Bobcats’ Bell not getting surgery?
Charlotte Bobcats shooting guard Raja Bell (notes) tore a ligament in his left wrist a few days ago but he might go ahead and try to not have surgery , according to the Charlotte Observer. The 33-year-old is in his last year contractually with Charlotte so he might not want to sacrifice the bulk of this year to recovering from surgery. The recovery from surgery will reportedly take four months.
Isiah Thomas "blindsided" by Magic Johnson accusations
It appears that any friendship that Magic Johnson and Isiah Thomas once had is over. Johnson says all sorts of unpleasant stuff about Thomas in his new book, "When the Game was Ours." According to the New York Post, Johnson's book alleges that Thomas went around the league spreading the rumor and trying to find proof that Magic was gay or bisexual after Johnson announced that he had HIV. Magic admits in the book that he went out of his way to blackball Thomas off of the initial Dream Team in 1992 that went on to win the gold medal at the Olympics in Barcelona
Nets moving to Newark?
The New Jersey Nets played two preseason games in Newark and the team drew so well there in comparison to what it normally gets for regular-season games at the Meadowlands that the team is considering playing a bunch of regular-season games there, according to the Newark Star-Ledger. The problem is that the team is supposedly trying to figure out a way around the $8 million penalty that it could incur if it doesn't play all its home games at the Meadowlands.

Lakers’ Gasol may miss opener
NBA Champion Los Angeles Lakers forward/center Paul Gasol's hamstring isn't feeling great right now and it apparently may keep him out of Tuesday's opener against the Los Angeles Clippers , according to the Los Angeles Times. He missed yet another preseason game last night and will miss the final one today against the Denver Nuggets , though he did have a light practice yesterday. "He had some questions about how it felt after a limited practice," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said.
